Only the coloring in some volumes has bothered me. However, we are lucky to get some of this stuff reprinted at all and that has always outweighed any complaints so far...

Yes! The coloring on the recent Legion archives is atrocious in some places and the reconstruction of the images on the cover is abysmal. The archives overall have majorly gone down hill IMO. Not worth $50, which is a shame as this was one of my favorite periods of the Legion run.

Until just recently, I have never been disappointed in any Archive.

But I recently purchased Superman in Action Comics Archive # 1 with weird water spot damage on four pages (manufacturers' defect I assume and it doesn't affect the story I guess).

I also think they went overboard in eliminating the gray tones in the recent Spectre Archives. Even if they made the decision to color the Spectre's costume uniformly throughout (it changed from gray to white during the series and the first cover originally had no green in the costume color scheme) removing gray tone figure modeling from later issues actually detracted from the artwork. This is an "artistic" decision that seemd more like the restoriation team was following a poorly thought out directive to remove all of the gray from the Spectre. No big effect on early issues but it made later covers seem overly cartoonish.

On the other hand the Aquaman, Sgt. Rock and Enemy Ace Archives were much better than I expected. There may be a weird sort of cosmic balance there I suppose.

The only thing I remember disappointing me was one of JLA Archives that had a very poor reproduction of one of the issues. But I'm too lazy to get up and look for the exact issue...

It looked like a copy of a copy of a copy that had been faxed or something. Does anyone know which issue I'm talking about? I wish I did...

I have on occasion been disapointed with an archive. This ususally occurs with Golden Age archives where some of the artwork or the stories are primitive. I have such high expectations, that occasionally, I am let down. Take for instance Golden Age Flash or Green Lantern. I had such high expecttaions and found the stories to be primitive. Having said that, I do not regret for a second purchasuing these archives. While I may have been somewhat disapointed, my joy at reading these early adventures clearly outweighs any dispaointment that I might suffer.

Ok, here I go... I knew what I was getting in when I bought all Superman and AC archives. The art is somewhat primitive but I do have pleasure with these books. What I didn't like is that for some of these, we had more pages then, as the volumes came up, they included less pages for a higher price. They also cut the inside cover and back cover of the Superman stories. So, my complain really, basically is that the quantity vs the price has gone down...
My other complain is that I would like the to have the Superman/AC archives on a regular basis...

My biggest complaint is that I don't like the early batman archives..dark knight helps a bit, and I have yet to buy DD or BIWF...But I really enjoy the regular World's Finest Archives....so I guess it balances out...I'll get them all atleast for historic significance....but some don't get flipped through much.

That said I'm in no rush to buy the ones that aren't high priority so i'm not gonna whine.

Also, my great enjoyment of Superman 3-5 and action 1-3 compensate for my disappointment in the batman line..as I thought I would not really care for them....Even Steven I guess.

I haven't ever been disappointed enough to want my money back...I hardly ever pay over 30.00 anyway...so it's not like I really spend 50.00. I've had paper errors, like the water ring mentioned above (which i believe comes from the paper company not the printer), and my Batman 2 coating on the dustjacket is starting to peel .... They are all worthy in one way or another, and atleast I don't have to pay thousands to find out I don't enjoy something....

That said...apparently I can't fully enjoy the Batman line until sprang takes over...

I can't say that I've been overly dissapointed in them production-wise. I suppose there are minor problems here and there that have cropped up, but in someways as long as those problems haven't hindered my enjoyment of the stories, I've not really given it much thought.

I didn't like Shazam! #2. I was hoping it was more like the Marzel Family Annual. That said, I enjoyed the Captain Marvel/Spy Hunter epic. The best thing about archives is that it's easy to unload the stinkers. Sold it on Ebay and it wound up costing me under $10 to read it. Movies here cost $9-$14 so $10 to read an archive is a fair price. I know, the library is even cheaper if they ahve some archives, I'm planning on doing that for ATOM #1.

I was disappointed with a coloring error in LSH 10. It's a Sun Boy story, the first one drawn and inked by Cockrum. My sister had it when we were little. In the archive, they made Sun Boy's boots blue for some reason. They should have been yellow, and were yellow in the original comic. When LSH 10 went back to the printers for a second volume--one that would correct the muddy printing--I figured that they'd correct that boot coloring job too while they had the chance. That's one of my favorite Legion stories (probably because it's one of my first) and I'm disappointed it still is messed up.

I wasn't that big a fan of Batman vol 2. Or DK vol 1. kinda boring. Batman vol 3 seems to be a bit better. In all, I was kind of surprised how quickly Batman moved from dark vigalante to more lighthearted fare by the end of vol 1. Maybe by vol 3 I just started getting used to it. I'll bet if I went back and reread vol 2 I'd like it better.

Not that we're talking space aliens Batman, but still the dialouge got cornier and Batman became a lot more, shall we say, easy going. I guess I was just hoping for more of the dark, moody feel of the stories early in vol 1. Once Batman got a that grin, I kinda started to lose interest.

Other than that, I can't think of any Archive that I haven't treasured. Okay, so there were some moments in the middle of Starman where it got a little boring, but I still don't regret buying it. Most of I did enjoy. And I would love a second volume worth.

Also, JLA is a little boring compared to what Fox did with the JSA, actually. But then I'm more of a Golden Age fan than Silver, so I wasn't really disaponted because I fully expected to like All Star more.

Following the wonderful first volume, Shazam #2 and #3 were really hard slogging for me. After the mediocre material in #2 I really had high hopes for #3, but all that Tuska art was just ugly and inconsistent. The handful of Beck stories in both volumes keeps me hopeful for future collections, but I'm amazed at how inconsistent the strip was as it went through its growing pains. I get the feeling that if the Archive series had been Captain marvel in Whiz Comics, the first three volumes would be among the very best in the entire Archives line. I'm assuming that they got Captain Marvel Adventures, which started so shaky, straightened out within the first few issues.

There are also a few Archives that really made me happy I got them through inter-library loan. GA Flash #1 made me wonder how the strip survived it's first year and a half, and Batman V4, while mildly enjoyable and always competently done, seemed lacking somehow. I suppose I had hoped for more from the early Sprang art, as his later work is some of my favorite Batman art of all time.

Additionally, I have the first three All-star Archives, and at that point in the strip, pretty much all it has going for it is the novelty of all those characters under one cover. while some of the work is so crude that it has a kind of appealing anti-charm, it's the only Archive series where I'm seriously considering skipping volumes to get to the good stuff.

Add me to the list of those disappointed in production values, specifically in Plastic Man. My '70s reprints [on newsprint] of the early Cole material are better reproductions of the line work. And I'm sure Sid Greene's inks in the original JLA aren't as heavy as they appear in Archives 6-7.

I haven't opened Spectre Archives yet, but I am really dismayed to hear about their removing the halftone modeling, especially as DC went out of their way to say that the graduated backgrounds in Superman Archives 1-2 weren't upgrades, but faithful reproductions of the originals.
